Advisory Board Spotlight

Title: Director, Emergency Preparedness & Corporate Safety

Company: Florida Power & Light

My inspiration comes from witnessing firsthand how safety excellence extends far beyond individual organizations. At Florida Power & Light, we’ve learned that the most effective safety programs are those that embrace collaboration and shared learning. When I saw the opportunity to join the Leadership Cabinet, I was excited about contributing to Florida’s broader safety culture while bringing insights from our enterprise-wide safety initiatives. The energy sector faces unique challenges, from extreme weather response to complex operational environments, and I believe these experiences can benefit other industries. More importantly, I’m passionate about the ripple effect of workplace safety—when we protect employees at work, we’re also supporting families and communities throughout Florida.

2. AS AN ADVISORY BOARD MEMBER, WHAT IMPACT DO YOU HOPE TO MAKE WITHIN THE LEADERSHIP CABINET?

I hope to contribute practical, people-focused strategies that other organizations can adapt to their specific environments. My experience managing both safety and emergency preparedness has taught me the importance of clear communication, strategic alignment, and building genuine buy-in from all levels of leadership. I want to share approaches that have proven effective in creating sustainable safety cultures, particularly around emergency preparedness planning, cross-functional collaboration, and employee support during crisis situations. The intersection of safety and emergency preparedness is critical—effective emergency response depends on strong safety foundations, while robust safety programs enhance our preparedness for unexpected events.

3. WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHER FLORIDA BUSINESSES TO GET INVOLVED IN THE FLORIDA CHAMBER’S [HEALTH COUNCIL/SAFETY COUNCIL/SUSTAINABILITY COUNCIL] OR PARTICIPATE IN COMMITTEE MEETINGS?

Safety excellence thrives on shared knowledge and collective problem-solving. The Safety Council provides an invaluable platform for learning from diverse industries and perspectives. Every organization faces unique safety challenges, but the fundamental principles of protecting people remain consistent. Through these collaborations, businesses can benchmark their programs, identify blind spots, and discover innovative approaches they might not have considered. The networking aspect is equally important—building relationships with other safety professionals creates opportunities for mutual support and resource sharing. Participation through the chamber demonstrates genuine commitment to safety culture and provides access to resources that can enhance any organization’s safety performance.

4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING OUTSIDE OF WORK? ANY HOBBIES OR INTERESTS THAT MIGHT SURPRISE PEOPLE?

When I’m not at work, I really value our family time together, whether it’s exploring new places, attending concerts, fishing, or just enjoying time with our rescue dogs. We’re also passionate about travel, seeking out everything from Florida’s amazing natural spots to destinations that show us different ways people think about sustainability and taking care of the environment. Living in South Florida has been incredible for our family. There’s so much to see and do, from outdoor adventures to great museums and cultural events. What I love most is how it lets me stay connected to my Cuban American roots while we all get to experience the amazing diversity here. I get to share my heritage with my kids while they’re also learning about all the different cultures that make South Florida so special. It’s helping them figure out who they are while teaching them to appreciate how different people bring different strengths to our community. These experiences make us all better people and better neighbors. We’re also passionate sports fans and love supporting our Florida teams (Go Noles!) —there’s nothing quite like the energy that comes with cheering on our local teams.
